Landry Shamet hit 2 Huge 3’s in the final 1:03 and made the defensive play of the game — drawing an offensive foul on an ahead-of-the-field drive that appeared to tie the game at the buzzer — to help the Knicks secure a 113-111 win in Dallas on a Wednesday night. Both Shamet 3’s came off tremendous plays by Josh Hart — a steal and an offensive rebound — to get him the ball.
It was a game the Knicks couldn’t kick away — they missed 5 straight free throws in the final 22 seconds, any 2 of which would have iced the game. Shamet missed 2 free throws, Mitchell Robinson missed 2 free throws, and Jalen Brunson went 1-2 with 3.8 seconds left, setting up the final drive by Brandon Williams — who scored on a break ahead of the field but wrapped his arm around Shamet defending to draw an offensive foul.
The announcers argued Shamet should have been called for the foul because he initiated contact. But it was a win-win for both teams as Dallas is 4-12 and owns their own draft pick. The Mavs are coming off a year where they famously traded Luka Doncic midway thru the season, then tanked, and got ‘lucky’ in the lottery gaining the #1 pick and drafting Cooper Flag. They are still rebuilding and could use every loss they get.
The game was razor tight throughout — both teams within 8 points of each other all night, with the lead see-sawing. Jalen Brunson returned after missing 2 games with an ankle injury and led NY with 28 pts on 11-23 shooting (2-7 from 3). Karl-Anthony Towns had 18 pts and 14 rebounds. Naji Marshall and D’Angelo Russell led Dallas with 23 pts each.
“I gotta make 2 free throws,” said Shamet afterwards. “Man a wild finish down the stretch, it’s a road win — they’re not always going to be pretty, that was not 48 minutes of basketball we would like to play — but we’ll take a road win and we can build on it.”
NY is now 9-5; Dallas is 4-12.
1. Back and Forth in the 1st Quarter
The game went back and forth all night, starting from the very beginning. D’Angelo Russell comes off the bench these days for Dallas. He seems to have been in the league for forever but he is still only 29, and no longer is on the big contract — Dallas signed him to a 2-year deal at $6 M a year. They tried him at starting point guard but he lost the spot to Brandon Williams.
Russell is sure-handed with the ball and can hit the 3 but still doesn’t penetrate like an elite point guard should. He entered the game 2 minutes in after Brandon Williams was charged for an offensive foul. Russell immediately hit a 3 to cut into a Knicks 5-0 lead, and a little while later Klay Thompson hit a 3 to put Dallas up 11-6, but a Brunson bucket and a Josh Hart 3 tied it 11-11.
It went back and forth — Naji Marshall with a 3, but Karl-Anthony Towns blasting home a dunk to make it 17-15 Dallas.

And it just kept going back and forth — Naji Marshall with more buckets, along with a 3 by Jaden Hardy — Mikal Bridges and Brunson and Josh Hart with buckets for NY.
After 1 quarter, it was 25-24 Dallas.
2. Back and Forth in the 2nd Quarter
More back and forth in the 2nd quarter — Max Christie and Naji Marshall doing most of the damage for Dallas, with NY getting scoring from Miles McBride and Brunson and Bridges and another tremendous SLAM by Karl-Anthony Towns.

Dallas fronted Daniel Gafford against KAT.
A Jalen Brunson drive-and-1 with 27 seconds left in the half gave NY a 52-50 halftime lead.

3. Back and Forth in the 3rd Quarter
It was more back and forth in the 3rd quarter — at one point NY took a 76-68 lead — the biggest lead for either team in the game.

But Dallas came back on some buckets by Marshall and a couple of 3’s by D’Angelo Russell so it was 87-85 NY after 3.
4. Back and Forth in the 4th Quarter
More back and forth in the 4th — Max Christie hit a couple of 3’s to put Dallas up 96-91 with 8:44 left. KAT responded with a drive, Klay Thompson hit a jump, and Miles McBride hit a 3 to make it 98-96 Dallas.
A Josh Hart 3 pulled NY within 102-101 with 5:57 left.
Brandon Williams kept penetrating and drawing fouls, getting to the line for free throws.
A Mikal Bridges 3 tied the game 106-106 with 3:45 left. But Dallas edged ahead 108-106 on free throws by both Gafford and P.J. Washington going 1-2 from the line.
5. Hart & Shamet Shine in the Final Minute
And then with 1:11 left, Josh Hart stole the ball from Naji Marshall and fed Landry Shamet for a Huge 3 to give NY a 109-108 lead.

Thirty seconds later, Josh Hart attempted a layup inside but was denied by Daniel Gafford. Hart grabbed his own offensive rebound and fed Shamet for another HUGE 3 to put NY up 112-109.

The crazy last 30 seconds went like this:
- Klay Thompson missed a 3 and Dallas was forced to foul with 22 seconds left — but Landry Shamet missed both free throws.
- Brandon Williams missed a 3 with 8 seconds left and Mitchell Robinson — in the game for defense — grabbed the rebound and was immediately fouled before NY could call timeout.
- Mitchell Robinson missed both free throws.
- P.J. Washington grabbed the rebound and drove the court, fouled by Josh Hart. He made both free throws to make it a 112-111 game, NY with 5.9 seconds left.
- After a timeout, NY got the ball to Brunson who was immediately fouled with 3 seconds left.
Brunson missed the 1st free throw but made the 2nd, making it 113-111 NY — and Dallas — out of timeouts — threw the ball in and ahead of the field to Brandon Williams, who drove and scored to tie the game — but the officials called an offensive foul as he wrapped his arm around Landry Shamet defending. Ballgame.
