OG Anunoby flew in out of nowhere to tip in Jalen Brunson‘s missed 3 with 1.2 second left to catapult the Knicks to a 107-106 lead and miracle comeback from 29 points down — as Madison Square Garden erupted!

Then with 1.2 seconds left, Karl-Anthony Towns partially tipped the Spurs’ final inbounds pass from Dylan Harper to Stephon Castle — Castle losing it inside with Josh Hart playing straight-up defense in front of him — and the Knicks had their Miracle Win as all of Madison Square Garden and Knick fans on the streets and in their homes went berserk in celebration.

NY takes a 3-to-1 game lead in the Finals.

On a warm, humid Wednesday night in NYC.

NBA Refs & Spurs’ 3-Pt Shooting Put NY in Hole

Earlier in the evening, Twitter was on fire with complaints by Knick fans and fans of other teams at the calls the NBA refs made against the Knicks to help put them in the huge hole. KAT was called for 2 fouls in the 1st minute of the game — one a phantom call on a bare touch, and the other originally called a foul on Victor Wembanyama on a KAT drive, but changed to an offensive foul on KAT after a challenge. That removed KAT from the game — and on his return in the 2nd quarter, he was soon charged with another bare-touch call — his 3rd foul so he had to be pulled again. Many felt the NBA was making sure this series was extended.

On top of that, 2 clear goaltends in the 1st quarter — a defensive goaltending on Luke Kornet and an offensive goaltending call on Wemby — both went uncalled.

All of that seemed to put the Knicks on their heels, and the freewheeling Spurs shot lights out from 3 to take a 29-pt lead in the 2nd quarter, and 27-pt at the half.

But in the 2nd half, the Spurs 3’s weren’t falling — although they stayed with their game plan to take them. The Knicks came back — gradually at 1st, pulling within 15 by end of the 3rd, then — down by 20 with 9:33 left — took the game in the 4th. NY outscored San Antonio 58-30 in the 2nd half.

OG, Brunson, Alvarado, KAT & Hart Down Stretch

OG Anunoby didn’t just hit the miracle tip-in — he had an amazing overall game with 33 pts on 10-15 shooting (7-9 from 3, 6-6 in free throws), with great Defense, a steal, and a block.

  • Jalen Brunson was also Huge down the stretch, leading the Knick charge with 36 pts on 12-25 shooting (3-7 from 3) with 7 assists, 3 steals, and a +11.
  • KAT had 13 pts on 4-5 shooting with 10 rebounds and a +17.
  • Jose Alvarado was a hero, playing the 4th quarter as another ballhandler alongside Brunson, and helping to work the miracle, spreading the floor, hitting 3’s, and playing great D.
  • Josh Hart (8 rebounds, 6 assists, and a +11) was also important with his D.

“The ball went over my head, so I couldn’t really dunk it. I just tried to tip it in softly and it went in,” said OG afterwards.

“Uh, it feels cool,’ added OG. “I mean, everyone’s pretty excited. I’m excited too,”

“OG Anunoby tweet below in 2020,” reminded NBA Analyst Ross Kreines. “OG plays with a purpose, moves with a purpose, defends hard the entire possession, is shooting the ball with confidence, attacking closeouts, utilizes his strength while never quitting on a play and plays solely for name in the front not back. Winner.”

1. NBA Refs Take KAT Out of Game with 2 Suspicious Calls in 1st Minute

Knick coach Mike Brown complained about the free throw discrepancy at the end of the prior game, when San Antonio was given a 22-4 advantage from start of the 3rd quarter into the 4th, helping them to win the game and pull within 2 games to 1 in the series.

The refs seemed to respond in this game — calling a fair amount of fouls on both sides (NY in fact had 28 free throws to San Antonio’s 20 on the night). But instead, the refs seemed to go at NY another way — calling Karl-Anthony Towns on a phantom, bare-touch call on the 1st play of the game, and then changing a call on Wemby to an offensive foul call on KAT less than a minute later.

NY — which had KAT attacking the rim from the start — were immediately put on their heels.

2. Two Spurs Goaltends Go Uncalled

To top that off, the refs didn’t call two apparent goaltends by the Spurs in the 1st quarter — the first a seeminly clear goaltend by Luke Kornet on a floater by Jose Alvarado with 3:31 left in the period. The refs said it was an alleyoop pass to Mitchell Robinson — therefore a steal.

Less than 30 seconds later, Wemby put back a miss to make it 32-17 Spurs — it seemed like an offensive goaltend but the refs didn’t call it.

Twitter exploded with accusations by Knick fans and fans from other teams around the league of the NBA looking to extend this series with game fixing.

  • “I hate the Knicks but they’re getting an absolute ref screw job in this first quarter,” tweeted Dana Beers.
  • “The officials have again turned a game in favor of the Spurs on an absolutely egregious call,” tweeted Danny Abriano. “This is the most outrageous thing I’ve ever seen when it comes to officials putting their finger on the scale Four goddamn games in a row now.”
  • “I do not like complaining about refs/umpires, but this shit is ridiculous,” tweeted Chris Kirschner of The Athletic. “It’s been three games of BS from the refs this series.”
  • “I will NEVER watch the NBA ever again after the refs steal this series from the Knicks,” tweeted Kyle Becker of Explain America. “It’s egregious. Unacceptable. Unforgivable.
  • “Refs let the Sprus get away with a CLEAR goaltend AND THEN let wemby get away above the cylinder putback….. man what the HELL is this,” tweeted Phenom. “This IS UNWATCHABLE. This is WWE levels of fake bullshit man.”

3. Mitch Hits Wemby with Flagrant; Wemby Taunts Mitch

The Knicks — and Knick fans and fans around the league — were livid coming into the game that Wemby did not get called for a flagrant foul in the prior game after he whipped Jalen Brunson to the floor by his head. The league reviewed it in the day prior to this game and said it wasn’t a flagrant.

Jose Alvarado said before the game that it would not be happening again. NY came in looking to enforce their own retribution since the league wouldn’t do it.

With 41 seconds left in the 1st quarter, Wembanyama scored on a drive against Mitchell Robinson to make it 37-20 Spurs, and as the two came down the court the other way, Wemby started taunting Robinson, saying “I’m In Your Head”. Robinson responded by ‘accidentally’ hitting Wemby with a forearm to the neck and was hit with a Flagrant 1.

Wemby taunted Robinson some more while on the ground.

Wemby hit 2 free throws to make it 39-20 Spurs, but would go 4-17 from the floor after the play, and missed 2 free throws in the final minute that would have possibly iced the game.

4. Spurs Hit Lights-Out from 3 — Go Up by 29

The Spurs led 41-22 after 1 quarter, and the 2nd quarter was an even worse nightmare for NY.

San Antonio hit seemingly every 3 they took, no matter how tight the Knick defense played them. De’Aaron Fox (who finished 4-9 from 3), Devin Vassell (who finished 5-8 from 3), and Dylan Harper (who finished 3-6 from 3 and had 21 pts overall) were the main culprits.

NY did a good job on Stephon Castle, who had a big game against them the game before. The Knicks ran Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart against him. Castle had only 13 pts in the game on 2-7 shooting (1-3 from 3). But Dylan Harper could not be contained — scoring 21 pts on 8-12 shooting.

Harper was scoring from everywhere, De’Aaron Fox was hitting 3’s, Vassell was hitting 3’s, and Wemby was hitting 3’s or scoring inside and San Antonio started to drub the Knicks — going up by 29 pts, at 71-42 with 3:06 left in the half.

The Spurs led by 27 at the half, 76-49.

5. Knicks Start Coming Back in 3rd — OG Hits 3’s

The Spurs pushed their lead back to 29 pts early in the 3rd. It looked like it would be a total wipeout.

And then, with 9:27 left in the 3rd and the Spurs up 81-52, Wemby thew an elbow that hit KAT in the teeth and was called for a Flagrant 1.

KAT hit both free throws. It would start the Knick comeback.

OG followed with a dunk off a Josh Hart assist, and then Jalen Brunson hit a 3 to pull NY within 22 pts at 81-59. No big deal. But maybe something?

OG hit a 3 — the ball rolling around and in.

Hart hit a 3. And the Knicks had 13 straight points and pulled to within 16 pts.

The Spurs pushed the lead back to 20. But Jalen Brunson pushed back with 2 straight buckets and an alley oop pass to Mitchell Robinson for a slam, and NY was within 15 at 87-72.

Vasell hit a 3; OG responded with a 3 and NY went into the 4th down by 15 at 90-75.

6. Alvarado Plays 4th with Brunson — Key Move

The Spurs pushed their lead back to 20 pts at start of the 4th on a couple of drives by Wemby and NY looked dead, trailing 95-75 with 9:33 left.

But Jose Alvarado started to make things happen. Coach Brown kept him in as a 2nd ballhandler alongside Brunson and that made all the difference in the world as the Spurs couldn’t blitz Brunson and NY could spread the floor.

Alvarado hit a 3, Mikal Bridges hit a deuce, Towns hit an amazing 3 while falling out of bounds with the shot clock running out and NY had 9 pts in a row and were within 95-83 with 7:28 left. Towns looked like he was fouled too but no call.

A play later OG hit rolled in another Huge 3, then Towns scored on a power drive past Wemby and NY was within 9 atΒ  97-88.

7. Brunson Leads Charge & OG Hits Huge 3’s in 4th

Castle came back with free throws off a drive — but Brunson replied in kind, hitting 2 free throws then scored on a drive next time down and NY was within 7 at 99-92.

Then Jose Alvarado penetrated and fed a bounce pass to OG in the corner who hit another Huge 3 and NY was within 99-95.

De’Aaron Fox fired back with a 3, but Jose Alvarado faked out Wemby inside and scored a layup for a 5-pt game, 102-97 Spurs with 3:49 left!

8. The Final 3 Minutes

Wemby hit a straight-away jumper — but Alvarado came back with a 3 and NY was down 104-100 with 3:07 left!

Fox mishandled the ball, then hoisted up and missed a 3 — and Brunson came down and nailed a 3 to make it a 1-pt game at 104-103 San Antonio with 2:21 left and kick off BEDLAM.

Josh Hart then stole the ball and went ahead of the field for a layup to put the Knicks up — but missed it — the ball hitting the back of the cylinder and bouncing out!

Wemby was fouled with 1:47 left — but Missed both free throws! The score stayed San Antonio 104 NY 103.

Jalen Brunson hit a floater and NY had a 105-104 lead! More BEDLAM!

Then Stephen Castle, defending well by Hart, stepped out of bounds on the baseline (while barreling into Hart) and the Knicks had the ball with 1 minute left.

But Jalen Brunson missed a jumper with 39 seconds left with a chance to put NY up 3. Down the other end De’Aaron Fox missed an 18-footer but Steven Castle got the rebound and was fouled — and made both free throws to put San Antonio up 106105 with 30 seconds left.

After a timeout, Jalen Brunson missed on a drive with 13 seconds left — and De’Aaron Fox raced up court with the ball. Instead of dribbling the clock out and taking a foul — he raced to the basket — and had his shot swatted by OG Anunoby!

That gave NY the ball with 10 seconds left and a final chance to retake the lead.

Out of a timeout, the Spurs purposely fouled to give NY only 5.7 seconds.

NY inbounded, got the ball to Brunson — who took a 3 that bounced off the front of the rim just short — but OG Anunoby came flying in for the tip in and a 107-106 Knick lead!

KAT tipped the final Spurs inbounds pass and that was the old ballgame!!!!
