No Jalen Brunson, no OG Anunoby, no matter.
Landry Shamet stepped up in the 2nd half — and especially the 4th quarter — to obliterate the Miami Heat — hitting 3’s and drives from everywhere and anywhere to score 36 points on 12-19 shooting (6-12 from 3 and 6-6 in free throws) to help the Knicks beat Miami 140-132 on a Friday night at Madison Square Garden.
Karl-Anthony Towns was the story of the game for the 1st half, as he carried the NY scoring load with 31 points, and finished the game with 39 points on 13-26 shooting (6-14 from 3, 7-9 in free throws) with 11 rebounds. Mitchell Robinson was an absolute BEAST — at one point in the 4th quarter hauling down every rebound on the offensive glass to give NY opportunity after opportunity — playing like a man against boys. Robinson had 10 rebounds, 8 offensive, in 14 minutes.
And Jordan Clarkson and Josh Hart excelled as well — Clarkson giving NY additional scoring punch — especially in the 4th — with 24 pts, and Josh Hart laying down another triple-double (12 pts, 12 rebounds, 10 assists).
NY, led by KAT, outscored Miami by 46-33 in the 2nd quarter to take a 10-pt halftime lead, but Miami pulled within 6 points heading into the 4th. That’s when Shamet took over, with Clarkson aiding, and Hart everywhere. The quarter started with Robinson hauling down offensive rebound after offensive rebound until KAT took over for the final 8 minutes and NY up 12.
Brunson missed the game with a sprained ankle; OG Anunoby pulled his hamstring in the 1st quarter and left the game. Miami was without Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro.
“Fun game for the fans,” said coach Mike Brown afterwards. “It was almost like a glorified pick-up game with good spacing. I actually got that line from Leon Rose.”
“It helps when KAT has a massive quarter like he does and that makes a lot more opportunity for the rest of us to be aggressive when so much attention in the second half is going to be on him,” said Landry Shamet afterwards. “We were playing off one another and it found me.”
On the MSG crowd chanting his name at the end, Shamet said, “”I think these fans know I love them. I’ll say that until I’m blue in the face. I love it. Love the energy every night.”
NY improves to 8-4; Miami falls to 7-6.
1. KAT Powers NY Early But Miami Leads After 1
Without Bam Adebayo, Miami had a small front line of skinny 7-footer Kel’el Ware and pray for rain. And Karl-Anthony Towns took it to the Miami front line from the start — beginning with a couple of 3’s and then powering inside for bucket after bucket in the 1st quarter.

Brown Credits His Assistant Coaches
“He reacted to what the defense gave him, first of all,” said coach Mike Brown about KAT. “But secondly, we wanted to play through him. Rick Brunson was the first one to say it — he was like, ‘hey, keep playing through KAT, keep playing through KAT, keep playing through KAT.'”
“I thought all of our guys as players did well,” continued Brown, “And my freaking staff was unbelievable — Chris Jent was fabulous, Rick Brunson was fabulous, BOC .. they were all really good and they were on point, helping me with substitutions, mixing in zone, kind of figuring where we needed to go with the ball offensively — and we didn’t just come down and call a play and go through them, we did it naturally through our stuff; we didn’t hunt mismatches, we just did it naturally through our early offensive-line attacks. But those 3 guys they did not a great job but a helluva job helping me coach this game tonite.”
Miami Hits 3’s and Takes Lead Anyway
But Andrew Wiggins, Norman Powell, Pelle Larsson, Davion Mitchell, Simone Fontecchio, and Kel-el Ware were hitting 3’s for Miami — the modern NBA — and the Heat took a 35-32 lead after 1 quarter.
2. Late 2nd Quarter Burst by NY Gains 10-Pt Halftime Lead
Jordan Clarkson came off the bench to give the Knicks a scoring punch in the 2nd quarter — hitting a couple of 3’s that sandwiched a KAT drive and a 3, and then Miles McBride hit a 3 and NY was up 49-45.
Clarkson continued to score on drives and get to the line for free throws — but still Miami pushed back and when Norm Powell hit a 3 with 3:06 left in the quarter, Miami had a 62-61 lead.
But KAT stepped up and hit consecutive 3’s and then 2 free throws off a drive to give NY a 69-62 lead.

Landry Shamet hit a 3, Mikal Bridges scored on a drive, and Josh Hart made 2 buckets in the final 33 seconds to put NY up 10 at the half, 78-68.
3. Miami & Powell Cut Into NY Lead in 3rd; Shamet Catches Fire
But Miami pushed back — Norman Powell especially was a pain in the ass in the 3rd, hitting 3’s and drives as the Heat cut into the Knick lead.
Landry Shamet started to catch fire for NY, doing the bulk of their scoring in the quarter with 3’s and drives, and then Jordan Clarkson kicked in.

The score was 104-102 NY with 1:41 left in the quarter when Miles McBride hit a big 3 and KAT scored on a drive to push Miami back.
4. Mitch Owns Boards to Start 4th
NY led 110-104 entering the 4th.
And that’s when Mitchell Robinson took over — ripping down rebound after rebound on the offensive glass to give NY 2nd and 3rd attempts.
Jordan Clarkson hit a 3, and then Landry Shamet cashed in on one of Robinson’s offensive rebounds with 3 free throws after being fouled taking a 3. NY was up 117-106 and in command.
“FREAKIN’ MITCH ROBINSON. OH MY GOD. 8 FREAKIN’ OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS! WAY TO GO MITCH,” coach Mike Brown would exclaim after the game.
5. Hart Everywhere
Josh Hart stole the ball from Andrew Wiggins and fed Mikal Bridges for a 3 and NY was up by 14.

It was a pretty basketball play, ignited by Josh Hart.
Observed NBA Analyst Ross Kreines: “Josh Hart will flat-out beat you in many ways by outworking you in all aspects whether that’s on both backboards, turning 50/50 balls into 20/80 balls also finds the open man, defends hard while creating his own opportunities on the other end and he needs no plays called for him.”
6. Shamet Goes Nuts Down Stretch, Aided by Clarkson
KAT replaced Mitchell Robinson with 8:27 left and NY up 120-108.
And down the stretch is was more Shamet and Clarkson.
Clarkson hit a drive, and then Shamet went nuts.
Shamet hit a 3, consecutive drives, and another 3 to put NY up 133-119 with 3:09 left.

Shamet hit 2 free throws off a drive and NY was up 135-122 with 2:15 left.
KAT free throws with a minute left made it a 10-pt game and game over — but both teams tried to score as much as they could to the final bell as this was a mid-season tourney game, where the total point differential counts in the overall placing.
