KAT & Knicks Crush Lowly Wizards. NY 119 Washington 102

KAT powers NY to win over Wizards.

Karl-Anthony Towns powered inside and out all night for 33 points and 15 rebounds, while a strong Knick defense led to rhythm 3’s on offense as NY crushed the lottery-bound Wizards, 119-102 on a Monday night at Madison Square Garden.

KAT took it to Frenchman Alex Sarr all night; Sarr is the 7-foot young Washington star who was the #2 pick in the 2024 draft. KAT’s masterful performance included hitting a 35-footer-and-1 for a 4-pt play to end the half.

KAT finished with 33 pts (12-24 shooting, 3-8 from 3), 13 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals to Sarr’s 19 pts (8-16, 0-3 from 3), 8 rebounds, and 7 assists.

It was not the first time KAT outplayed Sarr.

  • KAT had 31 pts (10-20 shooting, 1-5 from 3), 11 rebounds, 2 steals & a block vs Sarr’s 8 pts and 5 rebounds in a 122-103 Knicks win last March,
  • KAT had 32 pts (13-19 shooting, 0-3 from 3), 13 rebounds, and a steal vs Sarr’s 18 pts and 4 rebounds in a 126-106 Knicks win last December 30,
  • KAT had 30 pts (13-19 shooting, 2-5 from 3), 14 rebounds, and 2 blocks vs Sarr’s 12 pts and 6 rebounds in a 136-132 Knicks win in OT last December 28, and
  • KAT had 24 pts (8-14 shooting, 3-4 from 3), 12 rebounds, and 3 assists vs Sarr’s 8 pts and 4 rebounds in a 134-106 Knicks win last November 18.

KAT wasn’t the only Knick to excel — Josh Hart looked good again for the 2nd night in a row with 12 pts (5-7 shooting, 2-4 from 3) and 10 rebounds, and Jordan Clarkson added to strong bench play with 15 pts on 5-8 shooting. OG Anunoby was popping no-hesitation 3’s (16 pts), and Mikal Bridges (10 pts) shot well. Jalen Brunson‘s shot was rimming out all night but he still had 16 pts (6-17 shooting) and 9 assists.

“KAT was a monster,” said coach Mike Brown afterwards. “He was a monster on the glass; he was really good defensively. He was a monster inside and outside. He’s starting to feel and find his rhythm and what we’re trying to do. But I’m telling you there’s still a lot of room there to grow — not just for him but for us to learn him starting with me and for us to continue learning the different parts of what we’re trying to do offensively. He was a monster.”

NY improves to 4-3 — having beaten Chicago at MSG the night before. Washington falls to 1-6.

1. Washington Jumps Out to 30-22 After 1 Quarter

Karl-Anthony Towns came out firing — hitting two 3’s for the Knicks in the first 3 minutes.

But Washington was feisty — scoring from the outside on 3’s by Kyshawn George and Bilal Coulibaly, and inside on drives by Marvin Bagley III and Alex Sarr. When Corey Kispert hit a 3 with 4 seconds left in the quarter, Washington went up by 30-22.

2. KAT, Clarkson, & Defense Power Knicks in 2nd

Washington went up by 10 to start the 2nd quarter but the Knicks got serious — and went on a 12-2 run to tie the score at 34-34.

Jordan Clarkson came off the Knick bench to score and score and keep the Knicks at pace with the Wizards.

KAT also was punishing Alex Sarr inside — scoring at will on dynamic drives and stuffs.

“You love seeing this here from Karl-Anthony Towns,” noted NBA Analyst Ross Kreines. “He catches, recognizes how his defender is playing him, embraces his size/strength then puts Sarr under the rim, good use of off arm to create more space, then punishes Sarr and the rim. Don’t let your defender off the hook, punish them.”

KAT’s 4-Pointer at Buzzer Gives NY 57-54 Lead at Half

And then as the half was closing out, KAT hit a 35-footer at the buzzer and was fouled — for a 4-pt play and Knick 57-54 lead.

3. Knicks Defense & Rhythm 3’s Take Over in 3rd

After the halftime break the Knicks got even more serious, and took the game. There was Jalen Brunson with a tough drive, and Landry Shamet (starting) with a 3, then Shamet with 3 free throws off a foul while taking a 3 to put NY up 68-58.

OG hit a no-hesitation 3 from the corner, Josh Hart hit a drive, and OG stole the ball and dunked and NY was up by 13 at 78-65.

Jordan Clarkson and the bench came in with 5:48 left in the quarter, and Clarkson again gave the Knicks an offensive jolt, hitting a drive and a 3 to put NY up by 20 at 85-65.

4. NY Cruises in 4th

NY entered the 4th up 98-78 and held court as KAT continued to power inside and hit 3’s from the outside — scoring 15 points in the period.

Mike Brown emptied the bench with 4:16 left. NY was never challenged although Washington did narrow the deficit to 12 with just over a minute left. But Tyler Kolek got a bucket late and Landry Shamet hit a 3 for the old ballgame.
